WHAT IS AN IRISH PUB ?

There are a reported eighteen thousand Irish pubs around the world. Their popularity is neither accidental nor the result of concerted high profile marketing. All have one thing in common - an inexplicable appeal to people of all nationalities. Two of these fully Irish owned Pubs are here on the Costa del Sol, namely SHENANIGANS IRISH PUB and MOLLOYS IRISH PUB

But why are they called "Pubs" and not "Bars"? Well, Collins Dictionary explains that a "Pub" is "a building with a bar and one or more public areas licensed for the sale and consumption of alcoholic drink, often also providing light meals", and the same source states that a "Bar" is "a counter or room where alcoholic drinks are served". So there you are. However you won't need a dictionary to know you're in an authentic Irish Pub! - go raibh míle maith agat !

If you have never visited a Dublin Pub when it's in full flow - I'm afraid you're missing out on one of life's little glories! Humourous exchanges, friendly banter, deep discussions, and uninhibited interaction between all social classes, ages and backgrounds. Your occupation, your beliefs, or your fiscal standing, become completely irrelevant when you transcend the world of an Irish Pub. A veritable oasis, where views and opinions are as important as "a feed o' drink". Here in the space of an hour or so, all the worlds' problems will have had at least a dozen definitive solutions. Notwithstanding the possibility of an interruption by an impromptu singer in a remote corner, or a Bard with an innocuous poem of indeterminate length. Such is the freedom of spirit!

As the evening progresses, so do the intensities of the deliberations and the fervour of the consumption. You can count on it - just before closing time, there's always an influx of late arrivals. Now with hope fading of getting anywhere near the bar which could be up to five deep, a coded system of hand signals indicate their choice and number of drinks which will then be passed willingly by customers over the heads of other customers forming a chain gang to the thirsty, and the payment is conveyed back to the bar the same way. True camaraderie!!

The professionalism and dexterity of Irish barmen is a unique and integral element of the make up of any Irish Pub worth it's salt. It manifests itself in the wondrous art of being able to deal impeccably with fifteen or even twenty orders at the same time, while delivering each with a quip, and remembering them all individually for second rounds. An Irish barman will know your fads and fantasies, your strengths and weaknesses, and most probably yer granny!

But you don't need to go to Dublin - sample authentic Irishness in
